Emily McKay-Women’s Basketball

Position: Guard
Age: 21
Hometown: Toronto
High School Attended: Oakwood C.I. and City School
Major: Communications and a minor in Women’s Studies
Year of Eligibility: 3
Why did you choose to attend Brock?
There are A LOT of reasons why I chose Brock. I could have gone anywhere for school I guess. As for basketball, it was also a rebuilding year for the basketball program and I knew there would be an upwards of 6/7 recruits coming in my year that I could compete with.
How long have you played basketball?
I started playing basketball recreationally when I was 8. I started training seriously with former NBA player Tony Simms when I was like 10 or 11 years old. So pretty much, too long.
What got you started in basketball?
I was in and out of elementary school until grade 3 so I had never even really played any sports until I was 8. I only picked basketball over other sports was because I found it the easiest to practice by myself.
Highlight of your basketball career?
I’d have to say this year at Brock has probably been the highlight of my career. I got OUA All-Star and it was kind of the first time I felt like now I know I can play, and how my play came together more or less. Although, completing my rehab from  a torn ACL and returning to play in only 3 ½ months would probably be another highlight. If that counts? I’ve only really experienced that level or feeling of accomplishment a couple times.
Who is your role model?
There are a lot of people I admire for various reasons. I love the quote, “Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everybody I’ve ever known.” – Chuck Palaniuk
Extracurricular Activities: This is a weird question. Isn’t basketball my extracurricular? Anyway, I intern with the blog 1loveto.com. I also work closely with Tyrone ‘T-RexXx’ Edwards from MuchMusic, which is a lot of fun. I dunno if those count…
Favorite food: Sushi, fruit and vegetables, and rice krispie squares.
Favorite movie: I watch too many. But last movie that left an impression on me was "Colour Me Kubrick" staring John Malkovich. He played a guy that was pretending to be Stanley Kubrick. Which I imagine would be quite difficult, acting as a person that is acting as a person.
Favorite book: I don’t read fiction. So anything by Malcolm Gladwell, Chuck Klosterman, Steven D. Levitt & Stephen J. Dubner.
Favorite Song: Babe I’m Gonna Leave You – Led Zeppelin
What are your future ambition in both your career and life?
I want to do all that I can to eventually do absolutely nothing. But I guess before then I want to work in television and film.
Parents/Siblings and what they do?
My mom is a harp teacher, she has her own studio and works through the Royal Conservatory of Music. And I have 3 siblings but I honestly don’t know what they do. One of them is an actor.
If you could travel any place in the world where would you go and why?
Umm I hate traveling.
